Staring from the Stairs
Rick Hernandez
Recent Abstract Works

"I always catch them staring at me while I work, they always want to paint every time they see me paint. I guess I inspire them to paint, but what they don't know is that their works also inspire me," stated Rick Hernandez about his children Tatlin and Johan.

Hernandez's 3rd solo show, aptly entitled "Staring from the Stairs", features his latest abstract works inspired by his children's paint doodles and drawings.

"They have this free flowing process and a very innocent way of doing things which I myself want to achieve," he adds, referring to the splotches, smudges, and dashes of multiple colors that can be found on his children's works.

True enough, his latest works share a common sensibility with that of his children. With his child-like abstract renditions -- a 'happy' color palette of whimsical shapes, and layers upon layers of incidental paint texture details -- his works invite viewers to look closer at the canvas or step back to view them from a distance, to somehow understand and appreciate it.

Hernandez won 2nd Place in the 2012 GSIS Painting Competition, an Honorable Mention in the Metrobank Young Painters Annual and 54th AAP Annual Art Competition in 2001, and was a Finalist in the 2001 and 2003 Philippine Art Awards. His countless exhibitions include the 2010 Asian International Art Exhibition in Mongolia. He is also one of the participants representing Manila in the Langkawi Art Biennale this October in Langkawi, Malaysia.

His 9-year-old daughter, Tatlin, is now in her 3rd grade at St. Joseph's Academy, Las PiƱas while Johan is a 3-year-old boy struggling to drink his milk minus the feeding bottle.
