Fragments of Memories
By May B. Jandayan
"Leftovers in their less visible form are called memories. Stored in the refrigerator of our mind and the cupboards of our hearts."
- Thomas Fuller, churchman and historian
It is amusing that Thomas Fuller was able to compare something so lasting, to something mundane. Something so quotidian as a leftover from a simple meal. Though humorous in perspective we have to admit there is a ring of truth to it. Memories are indeed leftovers- bits and pieces, remnants of all the things that each individual experiences throughout their lives shelved into our minds. These small fragments of moments that left a lasting impression in the subconscious. Memories of young love, friendships and adventures that engulfed our senses. Our being. We found them to be sweet, savoury or even bitter. Other times we find them to be refreshing, enlightening and often hurtful. Sometimes when we are alone, while listening to the reverberating sound of music, we revel in these memories. We cling to them like the very air that sustains us. We keep them close and preserve them from a simple mug that lovers used to share. A song that danced with a best friend and saw yourselves singing to it all the time and it never grew old. A picture of the place that you always wanted to go back to, but you never did have a chance or maybe a special dish that always reminds you of home. This nostalgic reawakening is the afflatus behind Arden Mopera, Binong Javier, Dexter Duquiatan, Jonathan Castro, Raquel Bautista, Resty Tica and Rick Hernandez's group exhibit titled "Fragments of Memories," here each artist delves into their emotional psyche as they express their sentiments and reveries through non-representational works of art with burst of colours and patterns.
Looking at Binong Javier's "Field of Dreams," Javier uses droplets of paint cascading down like rain on his canvas as it slowly envelopes the darkness with an array of colours that reminds the viewer the mnemonic colours of springtime and rejuvenation of hope. Rick Hernandez's "Herbaria 1" whose emphasis of an incipient flora transformed from individual plant-like shapes; uniting into a full-grown leaf with fluid curved lines, against its tenebrous background. Wherein the artist seemingly implies that good memories bloom in the various milieu of life. Moving on to Resty Tica’s “Union #3” a mute purlieu is forever marred with thick multi-coloured encrustation gives emphasis to staining the consciousness of a once innocent persona. Raquel Bautista's "Gaia," (Mother Earth) is a romantic non-representational landscape of the beauty under the Earths sky.
Further in the collection is Dexter Duquiatan’s “Gold Mining” shows us a shower of yellows and gold basking us with warmth, while Arden Mopera’s “Distance Between Dreams” gives us a glimpse of the artistic expression of passion and composition against a dark foreboding environ and finally, Jonathan Castro's "Seril" named after the street where Castro resides, here the artists community is represented with overlapping geometrical shapes covered with serene white paint against its black murky background - a sanctuary against the maelstrom of life.
Astra Galerie opens its doors with the group show "Fragments of Memories" 2nd floor of LRI Design Plaza, 210 N. Garcia Street, Bel Air II 1209 Makati City.
