This is from the series of digital sketches I made before, it's a bit different from the studies but i'm happy with the turn out, been working on this for almost 4 weeks now (at turtle pace), and just finished it last sunday. Irasan #9 is actually a salt bed in Las Piñas in the 70's and early 80's where they produce, well, salt... it was along the main road of Las Piñas, Pulanlupa in particular, and as kids we would always look at it in awe specially during sundown as everything turns orangey, it has a big colorful hut in front with coverings made out of anything, from commercial plastics to cardboards and disregarded plywoods and even buntings from the just concluded town fiesta and those things made it so colorful and kids thought it was like a cool place to sleep in. The place no longer exist now and in place of it is a subdivision so basically i'm recalling the whole thing thru memory and I was a bit sentimental the whole time painting, sniff.

Battle of Zapote Bridge (1899)

Digital sketch
2012

I've been drawn to the convenience of digital sketching during spare time at the office, it keeps my creative juices flowing (yay!) in a way, photoshop is handy. Hope to transfer these sketches on some larger canvas soon. The battle of Zapote bridge was part of the Philippine-American war during the late 1800s, Zapote bridge is the link between Las Piñas and Cavite, and if you are living in Las Piñas, for much part of your life here on earth (which i am), most probably an elder has told you about it more than a couple of times. It's one of those battles that our ancestor's ass got kicked, but hey, they didn't lose without giving those yanks a fight.

Studies

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Been working on some studies for two large paintings. Usually I use chalk pastel for my studies particularly Mungyo soft pastel, which my wife gave me when we're still in college, chalk pastels gives me great flexibility for quick sketches specially on abstract subjects. Basically my studies are more of a color guide, my work changes drastically as I transfer these studies on the canvas. I'm hoping to finish these 2 3'x4' paintings by the end of this month, wish me luck.
